Sunday 15th October The Reflection Service
St Clement’s Church 16:30
The Reflection is a short and varied event with its own special purpose and journey. It marks as the closing ceremony of Hastings Week. It also celebrates the talents of our own.
This year Tom Kelly with his powerful voice will lead the first half with a personal selection of songs for the occasion. The Old Town Parish bellringers are an integral part of the parish and this year marks the 60th anniversary for the bells of St Clements. The Reflection is also the time to consider why Hastings Week takes place in October, a dreadful battle in 10660, but the Reflection also looks forward to peace for all. Finally, the mayor receives the gonfalon and Hastings Week is officially closed for 2023. All welcome.
Sunday 22nd October we shall be celebrating the Dedication Festival of St Clement Church.
“Souper” Saturdays at St. Clement.
The autumn menu will be served on Saturdays in St. Clement, from 12:00-14.30 beginning 14th October. There will be a choice of soups with bread, plus cakes, tea and coffee. There is no charge although donations are certainly welcome.
Any money raised is used for the work of the church in the Old Town Parish. Come and join us.
Please note, the first Saturday of the month is usually in aid of the Two Towers Trust, raising money towards the restoration of both of our parish’s medieval churches.
Christmas Fair.
This will be held in St. Clement on 18th November, 10.00-14:00 and the 2023 Christmas Tree Festival weekends 25th November and 2nd December, also in St. Clement. Refreshments will be available at these events.
Please see Sue Phillips (Tel: 882342) if you can help at the Christmas Fair. Helpers are needed the day before and stall holders on the day. Stalls will be Cakes, Christmas Decorations, Cards and Wrapping, Books, Handicrafts, Jewellery, Christmas tombola, Christmas “present every time” and Toys.

The Food Banks are low on the following items. If anyone can contribute any items, they will be very grateful.

Marmalade
My thanks to everyone who continued to buy the marmalade when access has been limited during September. My jam jar stock is somewhat depleted now, so am ready to accept more. It has also occurred to me that rubber bands are often used in packaging and then discarded when they have served their function. They are quite expensive to buy in the quantities I use, so I wondered if you would save your rubber bands for me, if they would otherwise be thrown away. They can be re-used, like the jars, over and over again – proper recycling!
I will leave a small container for them and see if you can fill it.
Many thanks, Judith

On Tuesday 20th June at 7-30pm The Bishop of Lewis will
conduct a Baptism and Confirmation within the Eucharistic
service. Corron will be Baptised and Poppy, Corron, Beverly, Jackie, Willemina, Clem and Simon from our congregation will be confirmed.
This will be the first time for 18 years that this service has been held in The Old Town Parish. It is an important service in the life of the Parish.
There will be refreshments after the service and a chance to meet The Bishop. Please put this date in your diaries and join us in All Saints Church.
Please pray for all the candidates as they take this important step on their Christian journey.

All Saints South Porch
Gareth and Ian met with the inspecting Architect and David Cheal (Builder) last Friday.
The damage in the south porch is much more serious than
initially thought. The works required are more complicated and need specialist builders to carry out the repairs.
We do not have any idea of costings at present, but it will cost a lot more than originally expected.

When the inspecting Architect carried out the Quinquennial
inspection in 2022, amongst other issues he reported that the heavy roof over the south porch (it’s covered with Horsham Stone) was gradually slipping down. In the long run it would fall off, but as it moves it is damaging the purpose-built guttering. Last year the Parish spent £5.000 on repairing the most serious shortcomings revealed by the Architect. These mostly related to damage to the roof. Anything involving dampness and water penetration needs to be dealt with as a matter of urgency. So the work we did last year was our first priority. The state of the south porch roof has now deteriorated to a point when it has become our number one priority for works in 2023. The cost estimated is £5.000, but possibly more, as dismantling the structure could reveal problems which at this point aren’t
visible. The Parish’s finances are stretched, to put it mildly. An anonymous parishioner has offered to donate £2.000 towards the cost of repairing he south porch. With Gift Aid will amount to half the cost. It would be a great help if other parishioners felt minded to help by making a donation towards the costs. Please speak to one of the Wardens if you wish to help in this way.

21st May Seventh Sunday after Easter
Collect. O God the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to our kingdom in heaven: we beseech you, leave us not comfortless, but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
First Reading. Acts 1. 6-14. When the apostles had come together, they asked Jesus, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’ Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.
Second Reading. 1. Peter 4. 12-14, 5. 6-11. Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in so far as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Reading from the Gospel of John. 17. 1-11. Jesus looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed. ‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.’
Post Communion. Eternal God, giver of love and power, your Son Jesus Christ has sent us into all the world to preach the gospel of his kingdom: confirm us in this mission and help us to live the good news we proclaim; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Government Emergency Alert System
As from 23rd April, this system will enable people to be contacted via their mobile when lives are in danger. On 23rd April at 3pm there will be a national test of the Emergency Alerts System. Emergency alerts are sent to all compatible mobile phones within the area of risk. They don’t track your location, need your phone number, or collect personal data. Only government & emergency services will be able to send them. This will be used in future to warn of emergencies eg, Severe Flooding. If you get an alert, you’ll hear a loud siren like sound. A message on your screen will tell of the emergency and how best to respond. You can check if the alert is genuine on gov.uk/alerts If you don’t have a mobile phone, you’ll still be kept informed through other channels.
More information can be found on the GOV.UK website.

Third Sunday after Easter
Collect. Almighty Father, who in your great mercy gladdened the disciples with the sight of the risen Lord: give us such knowledge of his presence with us, that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life and serve you continually in righteousness and truth; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
First Reading. Acts 2. 14. 36-41. On the day of Pentecost, Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd, ‘Let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified. ’Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what should we do?’ Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.’ And he testified with many other arguments and exhorted them, saying, ‘Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.’ So those who welcomed his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand persons were added to their number.
Second Reading. 1. Peter 1. 17-23. If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God.
Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God.
Reading from the Gospel of Luke. 23. 13-35. On that same day, two of the disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’ They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?’ Jesus asked them, ‘What things?’ They replied, ‘The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see Jesus.’ Then he said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?’ Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Jesus; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’ That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
Post Communion. Living God, your Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: open the eyes of our faith, that we may see him in all his redeeming work; who is alive and reigns, now and for ever.

Collect Almighty God you show to those who are in error the light of your truth, that they may return to the way of righteousness; grant to all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s religion, that they may reject those things that are contrary to their profession and follow all such things that are agreeable to the same: through our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
FIRST READING, Genesis 12. 1-4a A reading from the Book of Genesis The Lord said to Abram. ’Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and the one who curses you I will curse: and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ So Abram went as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him
SECOND READING Romans 4. 1-5, 13-17 A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans. What are we to say was gained by Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the scripture say? ‘Abraham believed God and it was reckoned as righteousness. Now to one who works, wages are not reckoned as a gift but as something due. But to one who without works trusts him who justifies the ungodly, such faith is reckoned as righteousness. For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only the adherents of the law but to those who share the faith of Abraham [ for he is the father of us all, as it is written ‘I have made you the father of many nations’] – Abraham believed in the presence of the God who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.
GOSPEL JOHN3.1-17 HEAR THE Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John There was a Pharisee names Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him ‘ Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God. Jesus answered him Very truly I tell you no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above’ Nicodemus said to him ’How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter the second time into the mother’s womb and be born?’ Jesus answered ‘ What is born of the flesh is flesh what is born of the spirit is spirit. . Do not be astonished that I said to you , ”You must be born from above.” The wind blows where it chooses and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the spirit ‘. Nicodemus said to him how can these thing be? Jesus answered him Are you a teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things.? Very truly you I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen : yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things ? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven The Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness , so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him, may have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him
Post Communion
Almighty God , you see that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves: keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord

26 FEBRUARY 2023 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
Collect: Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
FIRST READING Genesis 2.15–17; 3.1–7
A reading from the book of Genesis. The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, ‘You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.’ Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God say, “You shall not eat from any tree in the garden”?’ The woman said to the serpent, ‘We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; but God said, “You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.”’ But the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’ So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.
SECOND READING Romans 5.12–19 A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans. Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned – sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man’s trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man’s sin. For the judgement following one trespass brought condemnation but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. If, because of the one man’s trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Therefore just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so the act of righteousness of one leads to justification and life for all. For just as by the one person’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
GOSPEL Matthew 4.1–11 Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’ But he answered, ‘It is written, “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”’ Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, “He will command his angels concerning you,” and “On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.”’ 7 Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”’ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour; and he said to him, ‘All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! for it is written, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.”’ Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.
Post Communion: Lord God, you have renewed us with the living bread from heaven: by it you nourish our faith, increase our hope, and strengthen our love: teach us always to hunger for him who is the true and living bread, and enable us to live by every word that proceeds from out of your mouth; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Collect: Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross, give us grace to perceive his glory, that we may be strengthened to suffer with him and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
FIRST READING Exodus 24.12–18
A reading from the book of Exodus. The LORD said to Moses, ‘Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.’ So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. To the elders he had said, ‘Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.’ Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.
SECOND READING 2 Peter 1.16–21
A reading from the second letter of Peter.
We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honour and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
GOSPEL Matthew 17.1–9
Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!’ When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, ‘Get up and do not be afraid.’ And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, ‘Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man.
Post Communion: Holy God, we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ: may we who are partakers at his table reflect his life in word and deed, that all the world may know his power to change and save. This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 FEBRUARY 2023
SECOND SUNDAY BEFORE LENT (SEXAGESIMA)
Collect: Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth and made us in your own image: teach us to discern your hand in all your works and your likeness in all your children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
FIRST READING Genesis 1.1 – 2.3 A reading from the book of Genesis. In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. And God said, ‘Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.’ So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day. And God said, ‘Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.’ And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, ‘Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.’ And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth.’ And it was so. God made the two great lights – the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night – and the stars. God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. And God said, ‘Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.’ So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.’ And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. And God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.’ And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.’ So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.’ God said, ‘See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.’ And it was so. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation.
SECOND READING Romans 8.18–25
A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans. I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
GOSPEL Matthew 6.25–34
Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Jesus taught his disciples, saying: ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you – you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” or “What will we wear?” For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.’
Post Communion: God our creator, by your gift the tree of life was set at the heart of the earthly paradise, and the bread of life at the heart of your Church: may we who have been nourished at your table on earth be transformed by the glory of the Saviour’s cross and enjoy the delights of eternity; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

5 FEBRUARY 2023
THIRD SUNDAY BEFORE LENT (SEPTUAGESIMA)
Collect: Almighty God, who alone can bring order to the unruly wills and passions of sinful humanity: give your people grace so to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, among the many changes of this world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
FIRST READING Isaiah 58.1–9a:
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah: Thus says the LORD: Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practised righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgements, they delight to draw near to God. ‘Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?’ Look, you serve your own interest on your fast-day, and oppress all your workers. Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rearguard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am
SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 2.1–12:
A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians. When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God. Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him’ – these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God’s except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God.
GOSPEL Matthew 5.13–20:
Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Jesus went up the mountain and was joined by his disciples. Then he began to teach them: ‘You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’
Post communion: Merciful Father, who gave Jesus Christ to be for us the bread of life that those who come to him should never hunger: draw us to the Lord in faith and love, that we may eat and drink with him at his table in the kingdom, where he is alive and reigns, now and for ever.

Marmalade Jam Jar Appeal
Thank you to all the lovely people who buy marmalade orkeep me supplied with jars. Over the year the marmalade sales have enabled me to donate £800, to church funds, plus £50, donated to Christmas Fare & Christmas Tree Festival for sales over those periods. Without your help I would not be able to do this, so please keep buying, I can’t do it without you.

Thank you.

A message from our treasurer: Simon has worked out that we will need to spend an additional £14,000 in the coming year on gas and electricity given the hike in prices, making a total estimated spend of £25,000 for our three buildings. We will be doing our best to reduce our carbon footprint, both because of the cost and, more importantly, because of our obligation to take care of God’s creation. The heating will be reduced by a degree or two, so do dress warmly. Please bear with us, but equally do let the PCC know if you feel we are getting things wrong! And please do your bit by ensuring lights are only used when necessary. Thank you. Simon

Christmas Fair: We are most grateful to Rose Smith and Sue Phillips who have volunteered to oversee a “slimmed down” version of our Fair on 19th November concentrating on crafts and cakes. Further details will follow but please note this date in your diary.
Brass Rubbing Kit: The Parish has been offered a brass rubbing kit which is an ideal activity for visiting school groups and children generally. Quite rightly, the donor does not want it left unused in a cupboard until the Day of Judgement. Is there a volunteer who would be willing to encourage its use? If so, please speak to one of the wardens.

A message from Paul Hunt: This is simply to thank everybody who made my last Sunday into such a memorable, albeit somewhat sad, occasion. I shall wear my No.8 Arsenal shirt with pride (but who wouldn’t?) and use the very generous cheque to pay for a planned visit to the Holy Land next May. We made strong progress during the past two years and my prayer is that the Old Town Parish will continue to flourish. Thank you for two energising years and the friendship and faith we have shared. God Bless.

Lind Anso is quite a well-known artist and we are fortunate to have one of her paintings in St. Clement’s. It is the oil painting of a scene from the Passion Narrative near the choir vestry. The painting depicts various members of the St Clement’s Players who began our Good Friday tradition of acting the Stations of the Cross. There will soon be an explanatory note about the artist adjacent to the painting, together with a photograph of Lind Anso and a letter from her about her time in the Old Town where she lived in Hope Cottage in All Saints Street from 1968 to 1972.

A Churchwarden writes: This is a very sad day for us all because it is Paul’s his last service with us. We give grateful thanks for all that Paul has done for us and the Parish in his two years as the Priest in Charge. What Paul has achieved despite the Corona Virus has been amazing. We wish him a very Happy Second Retirement. HE WILL BE MISSED SO MUCH.
The Parish Eucharist will be followed by a buffet lunch after the usual tea and coffee. Everyone is invited to stay for lunch to mark Paul’s re-retirement. (There is no Parish Breakfast today. The next breakfast will be on 30th October in All Saints’ Hall from 8.30 a.m.)

Thank you to everyone who made it possible for St Clement’s to be kept open last week and/or enabled refreshments to be served. St Clement’s is the Borough Church and it is important that we are open at times of national importance.

The last sermon for which we have data (that preached on 8th August) reached 481 readers and attracted 21 ‘likes’. This is kept going by Keith Leech who would be keen to hear from anyone who would like to assist in the continued growth in this aspect of our mission. There are also sixty-nine subscribers to our e-mail lists who receive one or more of the Sermon, Parish News or Pews News directly into their in-box.
Well Done! Simon Scott (Ride) and John Barker (Stride) took part in yesterday’s “Ride and Stride” in aid of the Sussex Historic Churches Trust. Any sponsorship would be appreciated, not least because the Trust supported our restoration work at St. Clement’s.

School Governor for All Saints Junior School: The PCC is looking to nominate a governor. Educational experience, though desirable, is not essential. Please speak to Paul if you might be interested or know of someone who might be. Heather Summers is our Parish-School link worker and will be re-affirmed in that role during next Sunday’s parish eucharist. A parish nominated governor will further strengthen our relationship with the school – please give this prayerful consideration.
Ride and Stride: The annual fund raiser for the Historic Sussex Churches Trust takes place next Saturday, 10th September. Ideally, we would like to keep both churches open from 10 a.m. to greet the cyclists and walkers seeking to raise sponsorship by visiting as many churches as possible. We received a grant from the Trust towards our recent works on St Clement’s and so it would be very good if we could keep our churches open. This does, however, depend upon having sufficient volunteers – names, please, to Ann Wing. Our treasurer Simon Scott will be cycling to various churches and is in need of sponsors!
This evening: The theme of this evening’s Taize service at 6 p.m. in St Clement’s is Care of Creation.

Attendance: 7th August: 55 (collection:£166.02), 14th August: 43 (collection: £74.00), 21st August: 58 (collection: tba)
Good News! Bee Coglan, our church cleaner, has been signed off sick but will return to work on 6th September and not the end of the month as had been thought. We are therefore no longer in need of volunteers to keep the church clean in Bee’s extended absence.
Parish Breakfast: The Parish Breakfast is on offer today after the 8 a.m. service.
Final All Saints’ Organ Concert: The last concert of the 2022 Series is tomorrow at 7.30 p.m. and features the ever-popular Gordon Stewart. Gordon Stewart appears as a concert organist throughout the world – so why not come and hear him at All Saints?
School Governor for All Saints Junior School: The PCC is looking to nominate a governor. Educational experience, though desirable, is not essential. Please speak to Paul if you might be interested or know of someone who might be. Heather Summers is our Parish-School link worker and that link would be strengthened by a parish nominated governor.
Ride and Stride: The annual fund raiser for the Historic Sussex Churches Trust takes place on Saturday, 10th September this year. Ideally, we would like to keep both churches open from 10 a.m. to greet the cyclists and walkers seeking to raise sponsorship by visiting as many churches as possible. We received a grant from the Trust towards our recent works on St Clement’s and so it would be very good if we could keep our churches open. This does, however, depend upon having sufficient volunteers – names, please, to Sue Phillips (tel.01424 882342).
Our Wine Tasting evening proved to be a very great success indeed and folk are now asking whether this could become a feature of our church social life! Some thirty people attended, mainly non-church folk, and we raised £460 for church funds. We are most grateful to Nick Perry for masterminding this initiative.
Night Church followed the wine tasting (which had followed on from the Cream Teas) and attracted over seventy visitors. Night Church is a very important strand in our community engagement. Please contact Ian Gallagher if you might be prepared to help.
Taize Worship: Our next Taize service will be on Sunday, 4th September at 6 p.m. This draws worshippers from beyond our regular congregation. Why not put this service in your diary and come along for Taize chants, silence, meditation and prayer? Sunday evening services have disappeared from many churches (as have traditional 8 a.m. celebrations of Holy Communion) but the Ministry Team is planning to hold a simple service such as Said Evensong on the first Sunday of each month with the intention of holding a Choral Evensong in due course.
Parish Gift Day: The total raised is now at £7,724.38 (2021: £1,665) and donations continue to trickle in. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!

PARISH GIFT DAY – WHAT A RESULT! At the time of going to press, we had received about £6,750 including Gift Aid (2021: £1,665). This is truly stunning and shows just how much our two churches are valued. One donor wrote: “ Although I am not a churchgoer, I appreciate all the community work that the parish does. I also love the buildings and want to see them maintained.” Thank you to everyone who delivered copies of the special Gift Day leaflet and electoral roll letters.

Communion in both kinds: In compliance with the Sacrament Act of 1547 and the most recent guidance (May 2022) from the Church of England, we are returning to communion in both kinds today. This will be for the first time since March 2020. We understand that some members of the congregation will wish to remain cautious and continue to receive in one kind for the time being. No-one should feel under any pressure to revert to normal practice. Please note that intinction (dipping the wafer into the wine) is not allowed; the scientific evidence is that drinking from the common cup is significantly safer because the transmission of any germs or virus is very small indeed.
Hymns: 474, 507, 311, 391, 439,558

Lead Theft: This is a serious problem (yet again) and we have been warned about a current spate of thefts in our vicinity.
Frant Parish Church is facing costs of £30,000 to replace the lead stolen recently in addition to over £7,000 in repair costs. Insurers will not cover all of the costs. Please be vigilant and report ANY suspicious activity to Sussex Police on 999. Report it as “Heritage Crime” and a note of suspicious vehicle registration numbers is especially valuable to the police. Please tell your neighbours and spread the word.
Parish Gift Day Leaflet Delivery: We want to deliver a special leaflet to every home in the Old Town in the week beginning 25th July. Street bundles are at the back of the church – please have a look and take a bundle if you are able to deliver it. This should be delivered separately from the Parish Magazine to maximise impact.
Next Sunday: The Annual Magdalen and Lasher Charity Service will be at 3 p.m. in St Clement’s. Everyone is invited.
King Harold’s Mother is the title of a new one woman play by our own Heather Leech. Set in 1068, it will premiere at the Stables theatre on 25th July.
Your health and safety: We had an unpleasant incident with a rough sleeper early last Sunday morning. Please remember that the church should not be open unless there are at least two of us in the building. This is very sad, of course.

Please be vigilant and report ANY suspicious activity to Sussex Police on 999. A New Priest-in-Charge: As was announced in church two weeks ago, the Diocese has decided to proceed with appointing a chaplain to Ark Alexandra who will also be the resident priest-in-charge of the Old Town Parish. The post will be advertised very soon indeed and there should be no need for a long interregnum. Paul’s stint will therefore finish at the end of September and his last Sunday will be 25th September.
Night Church: The July Night Church is on next Saturday, 16th July from 9 p.m. This is one of our major exercises in community outreach offering a sympathetic ear or time in which to be still and reflect and, of course, refreshments.
